A Voice for the Voiceless: Rohingya Youth in Malaysia Raise Their Concerns.
In an inspiring and emotional three-hour discussion, Rohingya Youth in Malaysia gathered to address the pressing issues facing their community. As stateless people living in legal limbo, the Rohingya face a range of injustices that go largely unspoken in public discourse. But on this day, the youth took the lead — shedding light on their realities, dreams, and determination to shape a better future.
1. Rising Xenophobia and Negative Sentiment:
Participants expressed deep concern about the increasing hostility and misinformation targeting Rohingya refugees in Malaysia. From social media narratives to policy decisions, the community often finds itself portrayed in a negative light. Youth called for stronger efforts in public education and media advocacy to counter xenophobia and humanize the Rohingya story.
2. Detention Without Due Process:
The long-term detention of Rohingya refugees — often without charges or legal recourse — was another key concern. Many have languished in immigration detention centers under harsh conditions. The group emphasized the urgent need for legal pathways, humane treatment, and the recognition of refugee rights under international law.
3. Barriers to Education and Healthcare:
Youth also discussed the harsh reality of growing up with little or no access to quality education and healthcare. This systemic exclusion not only stunts individual potential but also undermines the future of the entire community. The group advocated for inclusive policies, more learning centers, and healthcare access for refugees.
4. Safety of Newly Arrived Refugees:
New arrivals face immediate risks, including exploitation, lack of shelter, and police harassment. Youth called for stronger protection mechanisms and community-led support systems to ensure the dignity and safety of vulnerable individuals from the moment they arrive.
5. Absence from Decision-Making Spaces:
Despite being the most affected, Rohingya voices are almost entirely missing from policymaking tables. Participants stressed the importance of representation — in conferences, refugee councils, and community development meetings — to ensure that decisions are informed by lived experience.
6. The Struggle for Rights and Recognition:
At the heart of the discussion was a shared desire for self-determination, identity, and human rights. Youth spoke about their longing for recognition as people — not just as refugees or victims. The call for justice, dignity, and agency was loud and clear.
7. Women’s Empowerment and Girls’ Education:
The group highlighted how Rohingya women and girls face double marginalization — as refugees and as females. Empowerment through education, leadership training, and community awareness was identified as a top priority. Investing in women means uplifting the entire community.
8. Child Marriage:
A sensitive but vital topic, the issue of child marriage within the community was addressed with honesty. Youth acknowledged it as a problem rooted in poverty, lack of education, and fear — but also one that must be challenged through awareness, education, and community dialogue.
Looking Ahead: From Dialogue to Action
This discussion was not just a list of complaints — it was a powerful act of reclaiming agency. The youth who gathered represent the emerging generation of Rohingya leaders — resilient, thoughtful, and ready to act.
They are calling on NGOs, governments, and international bodies to listen, include, and empower them. But they are also calling on their own community — to stand united, support one another, and push for progress from within.
Together, we can turn our pain into purpose. And our struggle into strength.
If you are a Rohingya youth, advocate, ally, or organization, we invite you to join hands with us in building a more inclusive and just future.
