Historical Context for Rohingya in Arakan (Rakhine State)

The lower line is more worn out and difficult to decipher clearly, but it might contain names, dates (in Hijri), or religious phrases like "رحمة الله عليه" (May God's mercy be upon him).

Rohingya History started from the 8th to the 9th Century, not yesterday. You can lie, but you can’t hide!.

1. Ancient Presence: The Rohingya Muslims trace their roots in the Arakan (now Rakhine State, Myanmar) back over a thousand years. Historical evidence—including Arabic inscriptions, coins, and traveler accounts—suggests Islamic influence in Arakan as early as the 9th to 12th centuries. The Arab traders and missionaries traveled along the Bay of Bengal and established settlements in coastal Arakan.

2. Mrauk U Kingdom (1430–1785): Mrauk U (also spelled Mrohaung) was a flourishing Arakanese kingdom where Muslim courtiers, scholars, and even kings played a significant role. The kingdom maintained relations with the Mughal Empire in India, and Persian and Arabic inscriptions in Mrauk U are a testament to Muslim influence.

3. Cultural Evidence: This stone and other archaeological findings strongly counter the narrative that denies the historical presence of Rohingya in Myanmar. The script on this stone and other such artifacts highlights the deep-rooted Islamic and Rohingya cultural heritage in the region.

The script is indeed Arabic (or derived from Arabic script, possibly Persian or Urdu), and it appears to be a historical inscription, possibly part of a gravestone or an architectural block.

The top line of the script seems to contain the Islamic phrase “الله” (Allah) or “محمد” (Muhammad), which are common in such inscriptions.

The lower line is more worn out and difficult to decipher clearly, but it might contain names, dates (in Hijri), or religious phrases like “رحمة الله عليه” (May God’s mercy be upon him).

Due to erosion, the exact transcription is not fully clear, but it is most likely part of an old Islamic tombstone or monumental stone with religious or commemorative writing.

Breaking News: Military Council Bombards Sittwe and Kyaukphyu — Over 200 Homes Destroyed Amid Arakan Conflict

Breaking News: Military Council Bombards Sittwe and Kyaukphyu — Over 200 Homes Destroyed Amid Arakan Conflict

Arakan: Military Council Bombards Sittwe and Kyaukphyu Over 200 Homes Destroyed Amid Arakan Conflict.

In a devastating escalation of violence, the Myanmar military council launched airstrikes and artillery attacks on the towns of Sittwe and Kyaukphyu, leaving more than 200 homes engulfed in flames. The assault occurred amid ongoing clashes between the Arakan Army and military forces, plunging the region into further turmoil and intensifying the humanitarian crisis in Arakan State.

Relentless Bombardment and Widespread Destruction.

Eyewitnesses reported relentless shelling throughout the night, with entire neighborhoods reduced to ashes. Families fled their homes in terror, seeking refuge in nearby forests and makeshift shelters. The bombardment, which targeted civilian areas, has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations, who accuse the military of committing war crimes against the ethnic Rohingya and Rakhine populations.

“The fire spread rapidly, and people had no time to save their belongings,” said a resident. “We ran with only the clothes on our backs. Everything is gone.”

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens.

The destruction of over 200 homes has left thousands homeless, exacerbating an already dire situation. Access to food, clean water, and medical care remains severely limited, and aid organizations struggle to reach those in need due to ongoing hostilities. Displacement camps are swelling with new arrivals, many suffering from trauma and injuries sustained during the attacks.

Local activists are calling for immediate international intervention to protect civilians and pressure Myanmar’s military junta to cease hostilities. “The people of Arakan are caught in the crossfire of a brutal conflict,” one activist stated. “We need the world to act — now.”

The Arakan Army’s Response.

The Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group fighting for greater autonomy in Rakhine State, has vowed to retaliate against the military’s aggression. In a statement, the group declared that they would continue defending local communities against what they describe as state-sponsored terrorism.

“Our people have suffered enough,” the statement read. “We will not stand by while the military destroys our homes and massacres our people.”

Global Outcry and Calls for Action.

The latest violence has sparked renewed calls for international sanctions and stronger diplomatic measures against Myanmar’s ruling military council. The United Nations, ASEAN, and global human rights organizations are urging an immediate ceasefire and the opening of humanitarian corridors to deliver urgent aid to affected communities.

Meanwhile, Rohingya and Rakhine diaspora communities around the world are organizing protests and online campaigns to raise awareness and demand justice for the victims of the latest attacks.

A Region on Fire, A People in Pain.

As flames continue to smolder in Sittwe and Kyaukphyu, the people of Arakan face an uncertain future. The destruction of homes, livelihoods, and entire communities underscores the urgent need for peace and accountability in Myanmar.

This tragedy serves as yet another reminder of the immense suffering endured by the people of Arakan — a suffering that will only end when the cycle of violence is broken, and justice is served.

Dear UNHCR Malaysia Office

Request for UNHCR Verification Cards and Registration for New Rohingya Refugees.

Dear UNHCR Representative,

We, the Rohingya youth community residing in Malaysia, humbly appeal to the UNHCR Malaysia Office to extend its support and services to newly arrived Rohingya refugees in Malaysia. Inspired by the effective initiatives implemented by UNHCR in Bangladesh, particularly the issuance of biometric verification cards and registration of Rohingya refugees, we request the introduction of a similar process in Malaysia.

Reasons for This Appeal.

  1. Identity Verification: Many newly arrived Rohingya refugees in Malaysia lack proper identification, exposing them to risks such as exploitation, detention, and challenges in accessing humanitarian aid. A verification process will give them recognized identification and protection under international refugee laws.

  1. Access to Basic Services: Registration with UNHCR ensures refugees can access healthcare, education, and other essential services provided by the organization and its partners.

2. Legal Recognition and Protection: The issuance of UNHCR cards will prevent harassment and exploitation of Rohingya refugees by ensuring their legal recognition as asylum seekers or refugees.

3. Support for Vulnerable Groups: Many refugees arriving in Malaysia include women, children, and the elderly who require immediate assistance and protection, which can be better facilitated through an organized registration process.

We understand the challenges UNHCR faces in providing services to the refugee population; however, we believe that a streamlined registration system for new arrivals will significantly enhance the lives and security of our community members.

Our Request.

We sincerely request that UNHCR Malaysia consider implementing:

  • A biometric identification and verification process for new arrivals.
  • The issuance of UNHCR verification cards for all registered refugees.
  • Expansion of community outreach programs to ensure all refugees are aware of and can access registration services.

Our Next Steps if No Response is Received

While we remain hopeful for a positive response from UNHCR Malaysia, we are deeply concerned about the urgency of the matter. Suppose we do not receive a response to this email or see meaningful action to address our appeal within [two weeks or one month]. In that case, we must organize a peaceful demonstration before the UNHCR Malaysia Office to draw attention to this critical issue.

The demonstration will be conducted peacefully and lawfully, as it is our last resort to highlight the dire needs of our community and seek urgent action to protect the rights and well-being of Rohingya refugees in Malaysia.

We sincerely hope it does not come to this point and that UNHCR Malaysia will address our appeal promptly and constructively. We remain open to dialogue and collaboration to ensure a resolution that benefits all parties involved.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to protecting the rights and dignity of Rohingya refugees.

Sincerely,

Rohingya Youths in Malaysia.
